How Hardware Security Keys Work
A security key uses a standard called FIDO2 (Fast Identity Online). When you log into a service that supports it, you insert your YubiKey and press the button. The key cryptographically proves your identity using a private key stored on the device. The website never sees your private key, and a hacker on the other side of the world cannot guess it or intercept it.
The key difference is this: a password is something you know. A security key is something you have. An attacker might trick you into typing your password on a fake login page, but they cannot make your YubiKey appear in their hand.
